Basic Intro to the island of Rhodes

Rhodes is physically the largest of the Dodecanese group of Greek islands and it also has the highest number of inhabitants in the group. Almost half of those residents live in Rhodes town, the capital. The island is one of great natural beauty with almost continuous sunshine, gorgeous beaches and the clear warm water of the sea.

Sites of historical interest and archaeological significance are many on Rhodes and include, on the eastern coast of the island, the Acropolis of Lindos which has, over the course of time, been fortified defensively by Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, the Knights of St John and the Ottomans. Also included is the Acropolis of Rhodes, dating from Hellenistic times, and the nearby Temple of Apollo. Near Ialysos (also known as Triante) is the Ancient Doric city state of Ialysos. Don't miss the Governor's Palace in the mediaeval city of Old Rhodes, the rebuilt (early 20th century) Palace of the Grand Masters, and the Kahai Shalom Synagogue dating from 1577. The Old City of rhodes is listed as a World Heritage site and dates back to 400 BC when it was founded. One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Colossus of Rhodes (the 32m high bronze statue of Helios Apollo) was created on Rhodes to celebrate the island's successful defence of itself against Demetrius Poliorketes. It was toppled to the ground in an earthquake and remained there for almost 1000 years until, in 653 AD is was cut up by Saracens and sold.

Many of the more popular tourist resorts are along th coast but, venture inland and you will be rewarded with villages of unspoiled charm and beauty nestled on hillsides and offering warmhearted hospitality. Those overlooking the sea will offer stunning views over the blue waters as a bonus! Rhodes town (with nearby Elli Beach) and Faliraki (nearby Faliraki Beach) are the liveliest of the towns but there are other, quieter villages also with lovely beaches, including Ialysos, Lindos (nearest beach Megali Paralia), Arfandou, Monolithos, with the ruins of the 15th century castle, Embonas, the highest village on Rhodes, Archangelos with its Church of St John containing frescoes dating back to the 14th century and Siana, hugging the slopes of Mount Akramitis and offering fantastic views over the coast and tiny islands off-shore.
